The beauty of living in the digital age is the endless access to pools of inspiration. Inspiration is everywhere, but one of my favorite sources of inspiration is Instagram. Here are three Instagrammers I've been inspired by for quite some time.
Gary “Master Williams” Williams is Director of Content Design at Creative Theory, a content design and strategy agency based D.C. I’ve been following Gary since around 2011 or 2012. I can’t remember how I discovered his profile, but I admired his videography work. He was this dope bearded dude with a mosaic of moody, finessed shadow selfies and still from wedding shoots he’d produced. Fast forward to the present day. You’ll find his feed woven with portraits of him ‘wipe me down’ type clean in his simplistic approach to menswear, flexing his hops, or sharing views from international escapades with his beautiful wife. He’s definitely got the juice with content design, but I admire Gary’s spirit above all. I shot him an email after being laid off last year, and he actually took the time to respond with actionable advice and words of encouragement. He’s a really down-to-Earth guy full of creativity and gratitude. And he's obviously got hops. What’s not to love about that?
Thank goodness I have nearly
folding my desire into itself
being afraid to claim it.
Yrsa Daley-Ward is a writer and poet whose words flood our timelines with truth. Bone, her book of poems, is a goldmine of profound wisdom with incredible brevity. A review from another powerhouse in published prose, Nayyirah Waheed, articulates it far better than I could: "A master storyteller, daley-ward is uncannily attentive and in tune to the things beneath life. beneath the skin. beneath the weather of the everyday. her poetry and prose are intimate and distant. sonorous and staunch. unwilling to yield and wondrously supple. delicate and metallic. daley-ward's extraordinary talent and ability to both see and write the veins of life is a gift. and it is one that i am truly. truly. grateful for." Yrsa Daley-Ward's posts always find me with impeccable timing. She inspires me to tell the truth, the raw truth. Inspiration like that makes it a little easier to continue to be an honest and transparent human in a world obsessed with curation and aesthetics.
Apuje Kalu is an instinctive Fashion Stylist and Creative Director from D.C. I discovered Apuje online somewhere between 2009 and 2011.I followed his blog, keeping up his styling work and giggling at his witty tales of red velvet and pork bacon. He’d just quit his job in corporate America to pursue his love for fashion and styling, which I’d found to be hella inspiring for several reasons. I even wrote a post about how dope he and his decision were on my little 27cents Wordpress account. Since then, Apuje has built quite a reputation for himself in the entertainment and fashion industries. His portfolio is colored with impeccable looks on an extensive list of celebrities and influencers. You’ll find his feed fashionably aspirational, as he navigates the industry-- taking breaks often to roam the globe with his equally stylish and creative friends James Bland and Elton Anderson.
