Two years ago, I bought a new sketchbook to start drafting ideas for a line of tailored cut and sew shirts for The Underdog's Co. I pulled inspiration from shirts I'd worn, felt, fell in love with and even shirts I couldn't find. I wanted to create something classic and lasting. Something authentic that would stand the test of time like some of Nike's oldest footwear designs. I collected inspiration from all over the place. Online, in retail stores, thrift shops, wherever. Unfortunately, my resources weren't sustainable enough to bring that inspiration or those ideas to life. So I shifted my focus to refining The Underdog Co's branding, presence, and social imprint. I didn't give up the passion for venturing beyond printing on industry-standard textiles though. That desire and awareness around what I wanted the custom apparel to be continued to grow as the brand's presence and visual language did.
When the opportunity to develop my own silhouettes for apparel presented itself, I really was excited to dig in. The initial samples for the men's and women's tailored cut and sew shirts began in Portland, Oregon. We worked with an experienced apparel designer to lay the framework for what'd eventually become a 100% ownable pattern. Versatility, simplicity and comfort were priorities for the new design. The intention was the create a silhouette that's versatile in its wearability and more elevated than a basic everyday t-shirt, with a timeless aesthetic and maximum comfort.
Beyond those principles, the most important priority was to create shirts that would provide a flattering fit for several body types, both athletic and non-athletic bodies. Therein lies the challenge. After considering the male anatomy, we were able to tailor the patterns based on the unique characteristics that were common across several different body types. It took over a year to refine the men's and women's cuts. After many, many moons and several rounds of modifications, the first of the new tailored cut and sew apparel is here. The new tailored men's cut and sew Underdog shirt is a minimal, modern take on a classic wardrobe staple.
The design features a scalloped bottom for a sleeker appeal when worn untucked, tapered torso to complement the masculine figure, elongated body, and banded lay-flat collar to avoid buckling and the bacon-effect around the neck. The soft and durable athletic-inspired organic cotton builds character with age, making it a lasting addition to your wardrobe. Every detail was considered to make the most flattering fit and most comfortable wear possible.
